The Phoenix Mercury web site is locked down until Monday’s big announcement

Phoenix Mercury Lock down

Update: The Lifelock logo was deleted from the padlock image on the site.

Visitors to the Phoenix Mercury’s web site this weekend are greeted with a splash page indicating the site is locked down. The marketing tactic, complete with a sound effect of locks being installed, is obviously related to Monday’s league announcement in New York City since two Mercury players are a part of the event.scrubbed_lifelock

Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter will be on hand for what is being described by the Mercury as the biggest event in the team’s history. WNBA fans have been abuzz since Friday when the Mercury sent out its X-Factor email newsletter describing the occasion.

Is the flamboyant owner of Spartak Moscow, Shabtai von Kalmanovic, going to buy the Mercury? I doubt it but all signs point to an ownership change. Will it be Mercury GM and Suns VP Ann Meyers Drysdale? Is it a corporate entity like Lifelock? It is their branding on the splash page. We’ll see.

The choice of New York as the location for the event is puzzling but maybe the glitz and glamour of the big apple means a takeover by someone with a high public profile. This is all conjecture of course, so take it with a… Read more

WNBA Weekend Update

By Cheryl Coward at 30 May, 2009, 11:42 am

Transactions and briefs for this weekend in the WNBA

In Wednesday’s WNBA media call, all of the coaches in attendance indicated they were going to wait until after the games this weekend to make the remaining cuts on their rosters.

Los Angeles Sparks head coach Michael Cooper even said he knew what his final roster will look like but will hold off on making any moves until after his team’s Sunday game.

The Connecticut Sun’s Mike Thibault is concerned about starting the season with just ten players. Second-year forward Amber Holt broke her hand in a game on Wednesday. She will be out for at least a month. And Thibault has said he will not cut her from the team.

The Minnesota Lynx will introduce their 2009 roster at the Mall of America, Sunday, May 31.

Chantelle Anderson, a center on the Atlanta Dream, wrote on her Twitter page this week that the Dream were going to cut her but the league has yet to make an official announcement about her status. She wrote an entry about getting waived in her blog on Yardbarker.com.

Rumor mill: On Monday, the league will make a big announcement in New York City. NBA commissioner David Stern, WNBA president Donna Orender, and Phoenix Mercury players Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter are slated… Read more

By Cheryl Coward at 28 May, 2009, 10:04 am

“I don’t feel like I should be ashamed of doing this, but I feel bad
for her and I hope she doesn’t think bad of me but some dummy had to
do this and it just so happen that I was the fool that done it.”
Martin Jordan of Levelland, Texas to KCBD-TV about selling the
contents of a storage unit containing valuable items of basketball
legend Sheryl Swoopes on eBay.

A Cautionary Tale: Sheryl, Malcolm and Michael, or Keep Track of Your Valuables

By Cheryl Coward at 27 May, 2009, 11:07 am

Sheryl Swoopes

Houston Comets, 2001.

It has happened to some of the most famous people in modern history, including Malcolm X and Michael Jackson. I remember the shock and heartfelt panic in my chest when news broke in the spring of 2002 that the contents of a random storage locker being auctioned off for unpaid rent contained a large cache of speeches, journals, and notes by Malcolm X.

My alarm stemmed from worrying that those precious artifacts of African American history might be lost without the care and cataloguing that could be provided by a museum or university archive.

Two years later, a similar incident happened when a priceless trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia was sold including items from the making of the groundbreaking Thriller album to home movies of The Jackson Five that had never been seen by the public.

Now it seems that some valuable pieces of women’s basketball history may be in jeopardy of being auctioned off willy-nilly because of unpaid storage fees.

Martin Jordan, a retired oil field worker, bought items from a storage unit in Lubbock, Texas, on May 22. Little did he know of the treasures it contained.

Imagine his surprise when he realized… Read more
