Storm guard Sue Bird underwent successful surgery on right hip

From the Storm:

Seattle Storm point guard Sue Bird underwent successful surgery to repair the labrum in her right hip, the team announced today.

The surgery took place Tuesday morning, Sept. 27, at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo. and was performed by Dr. Marc J. Philippon.

“The surgery went very well,” Dr. Philippon said via telephone from Colorado. “Everything that we expected in the pre-op planning was corrected surgically and went well. We expect a full recovery. Sue should be able to play full professional basketball by mid to late December.”

Bird remains at the Steadman Clinic and is resting comfortably. She will stay at the Clinic through the weekend and begin rehabilitation immediately.

“Everyone within the Storm organization is excited that Sue came through her surgery successfully,” said Brian Agler, Storm head coach and director of player personnel. “We knew she had been fighting the issue for a long time. We are all happy and confident the surgery is done and behind her.”

While Bird’s injury is the same that teammate Lauren Jackson had surgically repaired in June, the two situations are different in nature. Bird’s injury was the result of wear and tear over time, not the kind of acute injury that Jackson suffered during a game.

The Storm concluded the 2011 season Sept. 19 with a 77-75 loss to the Phoenix Mercury in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
