On the first day of the Rainbow Wahine Classic hosted by Hawaii, No. 4 Stanford shocked No. 1 Baylor beating the Lady Bears 71-69 and ending the defending national champion’s win streak at 42. Toni Kokenis sealed the win in the last 10 seconds by making two free throws. Baylor called a timeout with 4.2 seconds left and when play resumed got the ball to senior center Brittney Griner who missed an 8-foot shot attempt.

The Lady Bears played most of the game without starting point guard Odyssey Sims who pulled a hamstring early in the first half and only saw four minutes of action. Stanford led at the half, 31-29.

“I wouldn’t say it was a well played game but give credit to Stanford,” said Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey. “They knocked down shots, they hit threes, they came out on fire. I thought when we went down 14 we had an opportunity there to either fold…or compete and with Odyssey Sims out of the game, I thought we competed. I thought we put two freshman on the floor that played quite a bit and we had an opportunity at the end of the game to tie it or win. We didn’t defend very well today and we got to get back and play again tomorrow.”

Four Stanford players finished in double figures. Chiney Ogwumike led her team with 18 points and eight rebounds. Taylor Greenfield scored 16 points. Toni Kokenis had 15 points and Joslyn Tinkle scored 11 points and pulled down four rebounds. Mikaela Ruef grabbed 12 rebounds for the Cardinal.

Stanford held Griner to just four points in 1st half. She finished with 22. Odyssey Sims only played 4 minutes in loss to Stanford. Sims has a pulled left hamstring.

The loss marked Baylor’s first regular season non-conference loss since a 65-64 defeat at UConn on Nov. 16, 2010. Overall, Baylor’s last loss was March 29, 2011 in the NCAA regional semifinals in Dallas to Texas A&M.
