Following in the footsteps of Central Florida, Houston, Memphis and Southern Methodist, Tulane University will leave Conference USA to join the Big East in all sports. The school made the announcement Tuesday and will begin competing in their new conference  beginning in the 2014-15 season.

“The Big East Conference has a very proud history of basketball and we are very excited to now be a part of that great legacy,” said Tulane women’s basketball coach Lisa Stockton. “This is another positive step for both Tulane University and our athletics department. In the last two-plus years, we’ve added a practice facility, renovated our home court and now have a new conference on the horizon. This is indeed a great time to be part of the Tulane family.”

Temple will join the Big East in July 2013. The Big East is also losing five members. Syracuse and Pittsburgh will join the ACC in July 2013 and Rutgers will join the Big Ten in 2014. Notre Dame is also joining the ACC but not until 2014. The ACC voted to add Louisville on the morning of Nov. 28.

If the conference membership remains the same until 2014-15, the Big East will include the following schools in women’s basketball when Tulane begins competing in the league:

  • Temple
  • Cincinnati
  • Connecticut
  • Louisville*
  • South Florida
  • Central Florida
  • Houston
  • Memphis
  • Southern Methodist
  • Tulane
  • DePaul
  • Georgetown
  • Marquette
  • Providence
  • St. John’s
  • Seton Hall
  • Villanova

The list does not include football-only members.

*The ACC presidents and chancellors voted to invite Louisville to the conference to replace the lost of Maryland to the Big Ten.
