TCU can’t complete comeback Tuesday night vs. Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – TCU stormed all the way back off a 24-4 run Tuesday night to tie the game midway through the second half, but Texas was able to hold on for a 59-46 victory at the Frank Erwin Center.

The Horned Frogs who opened the second half on a 16-4 run to tie the game at 34-34 with 12:51 showing on the scoreboard, tried time and time again to complete the comeback, but in the end couldn’t get over the hump. In all, between the first and second half Tuesday, the Frogs went on a 24-4 run.

On the night, Kamy Cole led the Horned Frog attack with 14 points and five boards, while Zahna Medley added nine points.

Texas was powered by Empress Davenport and Imani McGee-Stafford’s 15 points apiece, respectively.

With the loss, TCU moved to 8-19 overall and 1-15 in league play, while Texas improved to 11-16 overall and 4-12 in conference action.

Medley made it a 32-21 game early on in the second half, tickling the twine from deep at the 17:30 mark. A few plays later, Veja Hamilton went to work, draining a jumper to pull the Frogs within nine at 32-23 with a little over 15 minutes remaining in the contest.

TCU, who exploded out of the locker room at the break, was in the midst of a 20-2 run between the two periods when Chelsea Prince rebounded the rock and drove it home to make the score 32-30 with 14:06 to go in the half. In all, the freshmen trio of Medley, Cole and Hamilton scored 14 of the 20 points,

With the scoreboard reading 34-32 in slight favor of Texas, Cole promptly found Ashley Colbert down low to tie the game at 34-34 with a little over 12 minutes remaining in the half. The two teams would go back and fourth the next couple of possessions until Texas jumped back on top 47-38 with 7:37 to go in the game.

Latricia Lovings made it a 49-40 game with a little over six minutes to go on a fast-break layup, but the Longhorns answered right back before Donielle Breaux drove to the hole and found the bottom of the bucket.

Cole brought the Frogs within seven at the 4:02 mark of the half, draining a jumper to make it 51-44. A late layup by Breaux cut to the Longhorn lead to 55-46 at the 1:10 mark

Texas jumped on top early in the game 7-1, but Lovings ended the run for the time being, powering home a layup three minutes into the contest. The Longhorns though would not be denied as they made the scoreboard read 21-3 midway through the opening frame of play. Time and Time again during the stretch, the Frogs had several chances to score, but came up empty on the offensive end of the court.

Donielle Breaux tried to spark the Frogs with a little over seven minutes remaining in the period with a jumper, but Texas responded to make it 25-5 before Medley dropped a trey ball at the 6:18 mark to inch the Frogs closer.

Down the stretch, Medley and Cole pulled the Frogs within 12 as the duo combined to score the last eight points for TCU. In all, the freshmen duo went on an 8-0 run, outscoring the entire Texas team during the stretch to bring the halftime score to 30-18.

The Horned Frogs will close out their home schedule Saturday against Iowa State.
