Senegal clinches 11th AfroBasket Women title and qualifies for the 2016 Olympics

Senegal outplayed Cameroon in Saturday’s Final to win AfroBasket Women 2015 and qualify for the 2016 Olympics.

The Senegalese ended Cameroon’s unbeaten run in their capital city of Yaounde with a 81-66 triumph to claim their 11th African title.

Aya Traore and Astou Traore combined for 33 of Senegal’s points. Ramses Lonlack was the only Cameroonian to score in double digits with 14 points.

Shooting guard Aya Traore was rewarded for her impressive tournament and a huge individual performance (16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals) in the final by receiving the Most Valuable Player award.

The 32-year-old headlined the All-Star Five which also included Cameroon’s Ramses Lonlack, Geraldine Robert of Gabon, Deolinda Ngulela of Mozambique and Nigeria’s Adaora Elonu.

Nigeria used a dominant performance in the final quarter of the Third-Place Game to beat Angola 65-55 and keep their Olympic hopes alive.

**Teams that came in second and third booked places in the 2016 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT).

By virtue of winning the championship, Senegal qualified for the 2016 Rio Games, while Cameroon and Nigeria booked places in the 2016 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT).
