Connecticut Sun sign Shekinna Stricklen to a new two-year contract

The Connecticut Sun signed Shekinna Stricklen to a new two-year contract. Per team policy, terms were not released.

“Shekinna is a talented guard that is a proven three-point threat in the WNBA,” Sun coach Curt Miller said. “She fits into our offensive system and will help space the floor for our skilled post game. We are excited to have her back with the Sun and I look forward to working with her on the court.”

A candidate for WNBA Sixth Player of the Year in 2015, the 6-foot-2 Stricklen led the Sun with 51 made threes last year. She came off the bench in all 34 games, averaging 7.7 points per game. She reached double-figures in 15 games with a season-high 19 points at Washington on July 19th, and she scored the game-winning basket against Seattle on July 31st.

“Shekinna did a great job for us last year and she wanted to return to Connecticut as much as we wanted her back,” Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said. “She will be an important part of the Sun moving forward.”

Stricklen was originally selected out of Tennessee with the No. 2 pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm. After three seasons, Connecticut acquired Stricklen and Camille Little in exchange for Renee Montgomery and two picks (Nos. 3 and 15) in the 2015 WNBA Draft.

Connecticut opens the 2016 season at Chicago on May 14th and will play its home opener at Mohegan Sun Arena on May 21st at 7 p.m. against the Washington Mystics.
