SportsBusiness Daily: WNBA set to ink marquee partnership deal with Verizon, replacing Boost Mobile

According to an article published Monday by SportsBusiness Daily, the WNBA is on the verge of sealing a deal with Verizon that will make the telecommunications company the league’s new marquee partner.

As the WNBA heads into its 20th season, Verizon’s logo is set to be on the front of the jerseys of 10 of the league’s 12 teams.

The Connecticut Sun and the San Antonio Stars have deals with competing telecommunications firms. The logo of Sun marquee partner Frontier Communications is on the front of the franchise’s jerseys. The Stars play in AT&T Center in San Antonio and AT&T sponsors several promotions for the team. Verizon provides the platform for the Phoenix Mercury’s mobile app and has sponsored Mercury events for several years.

The deal will be the largest sponsorship in terms of dollars and comes after Boost Mobile did not renew its four-year deal with the league that began in August 2011. The deal will not include sponsorship of the league’s weekly, monthly or postseason awards.

Boost Mobile was the first league-wide marquee partner of the WNBA.
