Former Australian Opals star, three-time Olympian and Phoenix Mercury original Michele Timms was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2016 on August 27 at the House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland.

During her career, Timms was a dazzling guard on the court and the first Australian (male or female) to play overseas. She landed in Germany to play for Lotus München in 1989.

She began her stellar career in the WNBL in Australia and won five championships in the league. In the WNBA’s inaugural year she played for Phoenix where she was a fan favorite and easily recognizable because of her spiky blonde hair. During her first season she averaged 12.0 points per game and 5.1 assists per contest. She helped lead the Mercury to the WNBA Finals in 1998. She retired in 2001.

The Mercury retired her jersey in 2002. She was only the second player to have their jersey retired in the WNBA. Timms was inducted into the Basketball Australia Hall of Fame in 2006 and joined the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
