Hoopfeed Poll for 1/31/17: SEC and Pac-12 action leads to shifts in top ten

While unanimous No. 1 UConn continued its historic streak, winning the program’s 95th consecutive game, there were upsets in the SEC and Pac-12 that led to shifts in this week’s Hoopfeed Poll top ten.

No. 2 Baylor and No. 3 Maryland held their positions but South Carolina dropped two spots to No. 6. Unranked Tennessee stunned the Gamecocks Monday night for a 64-61 road win in front of 13, 690 fans in Colubmia. Jamie Nared had a career-high 27 points for the Lady Vols in the win. The game was the first SEC loss of the season for South Carolina.

Next up for South Carolina is a Thursday matchup against Kentucky, while Tennessee plays LSU on the same day.

Last week’s No. 7, Washington, fell three spots after losing to this week’s No. 7 Stanford Sunday night. The Cardinal completed a weekend sweep of the Pac-12’s Washington schools during a Pacific Northwest road trip.

A sell-out crowd watch Stanford beat the Huskies. The Cardinal rallied from an 18-point first-half deficit in the win. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, the older brother of Stanford freshman guard Anna Wilson, attended the game along with his wife, entertainer Ciara.

The 72-68 win put Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer on the cusp of 1,000 career victories. She needs just one more win to hit the milestone. Stanford’s next game is a home contest vs. Southern California.

Arizona State experienced the biggest drop in the poll, falling five spots to No. 21. The Sun Devils had a tough week on a Los Angeles road trip. They fell to UCLA and USC over the weekend. The 65-50 defeat vs. USC was the third consecutive loss for Arizona State.

South Florida moved up the most in the poll, leaping five spots to land at No. 18. The Bulls topped Southern Methodist and Temple last week. The win at Temple snapped a 12-game win streak for the Owls and handed them their first American Athletic Conference loss of the season. The Bulls are now tied with Temple for second place in the conference.

Other teams that received votes: Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Harvard, Michigan, Kentucky, Missouri, Oregon, Temple. Virginia Tech dropped out of the top 25.
