University of Texas sophomore Joyner Holmes will not be enrolled at the school or compete during the fall 2017 semester due to a university violation the women’s basketball program announced Saturday. She will be able to rejoin the squad on December 23, 2017. Currently, she is participating with the USA Basketball U19 National Team at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Italy.

Holmes (Cedar Hill, TX) had an accolade-filled freshman year. She was named the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year and was a First-Team All-Big 12 selection. She averaged 12.1 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per contest during her first college season.

Statement from Joyner Holmes
“I take full responsibility for my mistakes and I am disappointed in my actions. I understand what a great privilege it is to be a student-athlete at The University of Texas and that is not something I take lightly. I am committed to using this time to focus on myself, academics, and improving as a basketball player. I am looking forward to returning in December to help our team reach our goals on the court.”

Statement from head coach Karen Aston
“Although I am disappointed that Joyner will not be with us in the fall semester, I am firmly convinced that she will learn and grow through this process. She will re-join us as a better version of herself and a more mature student-athlete. We will welcome her back with open arms when she returns in December.”
