On July 28, the Washington Mystics were scheduled to take on the Connecticut Sun in a highly anticipated match up that would determine the top dog in the Eastern conference.

The final game of the series was at the Verizon Center,  but after a constant roof leak into the scoreboard then onto the court, the 7 p.m. game was delayed.  After a fifty minutes of deliberation, the game was declared postponed. The abrupt game cancellation tacks on another bump in the regular season as the postseason approaches.

Only 11 games remain in the regular season. Tied with a 13-9 record, the Mystics and the Sun look to finish atop of the competition, winning the Eastern conference and staying afloat among the top eight teams that qualify for the postseason.

Washington, led by forwards Elena Delle Donne and Emma Meesseman, will host seven of their 11 remaining games. The Mystics are 8-2 at home and 6-0 against Eastern conference opponents. The growing crowd attendance is an advantage the Mystics can utilize, averaging nearly 7,000 engaging fans per game.

Without guard Tayler Hill for the rest of the season, the Mystics’ determination to makeup for loss points continues to carry them to a fruitful end. The Mystics have won back-to-back games without Hill, with guard Kristi Toliver scoring 31 points and Meesseman with 34 points in the last two games. The Mystics bench has contributed 23.4 points in the last five games.

Washington continues their season on the road against the Atlanta Dream on June 30. They will return home to the Verizon Center on August 6th against the Phoenix Mercury. The rescheduled date against the Sun has yet to be released.

NOTES:

  • July 14: Washington Mystics guard Tayler Hill will miss the remainder of the 2017 season with ACL tear in her right knee against the Indiana Fever.
  • July 27: Mystics waive Old Dominion guard Jennie Simms
  • July 28: Allison Hightower signed to a seven-day contract
