Thursday evening, Terrence Thomas at the San Antonio Express-News reported that the WNBA’s San Antonio Stars was going to be sold and relocated to another city. The rumors about the sale quickly began and some speculated that the team would move to either Las Vegas or the San Francisco Bay area.

“Negotiations with a potential buyer of the Stars team are ongoing,” WNBA spokesperson Dina Skokos said in a statement. “Once those discussions are concluded, we will provide additional information.”

A new location would be the third for the Stars, a franchise that started out in Salt Lake City as the Utah Starzz in 1997. The team moved San Antonio in late 2002 as the Silver Stars and dropped “Stars” from the name in 2014.The team is owned by Spurs Sports & Entertainment L.L.C., a group that also owns the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs other several other sports franchises.

The Stars ended the 2017 season with an 8-26 record at the bottom of the league under first-year head coach and former Stars player Vickie Johnson.

The WNBA has been mum so far on the move but the Stars posted a message on Facebook to fans about the relocation.
