The Lady Bears will also match up against four other teams that saw 2010 NCAA Tournament action: Tennessee, Liberty, Notre Dame and Michigan State.

“We have assembled the toughest non-conference schedule in program history,” said Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey. “I feel that our program is at a point that we will benefit tremendously by playing a tough schedule. The Texas A&M coaches were still waiting for me with open arms. I am really excited to join the Aggie family and be a part of the winning tradition that Coach Blair, his staff and players have built there.”

Bone, a 6-foot-5 center out of Dulles High School, requested a transfer from the University of South Carolina and will sit out the 2010-11 season due to NCAA transfer rules. She will be eligible to play for the nationally-ranked Aggies during the 2011-12 campaign as a sophomore. The No. 2 overall prospect in the Class of 2009 by several scouting services, Bone is the fourth McDonald’s All-American and highest-rated player to ever sign with A&M.

“Today is a testament of the close knit family we have with our players, my staff and our entire program,” said Blair. “There is an unbelievable amount of pressure on the elite athletes to make the right decision at the age of 17, and sometimes, it just doesn’t work out. Sometimes your priorities change. The state of Texas is a special place. I’m not so sure if homesickness is the right word. Kelsey has deeps roots in this state that come from playing alongside young ladies she has grown up with and playing in front of friends and family. Those roots are very special – it is why I chose to come to Texas A&M as well.”

During her freshman season for the Gamecocks, Bone became the first South Carolina player to be tabbed Southeastern Conference Newcomer of the Year. She also earned Second-Team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman Team honors by the league’s head coaches.

Prior to South Carolina, she was a four-year letter-winner in basketball under head coach Doug Lechtenberger at Dulles High School in Sugarland, Texas. Bone was a consensus All-American averaging 19.2 points and 8.7 rebounds as a senior. She was named the 2009 McDonald’s John Wooden National High School Player of the Year and made three appearances on the prestigious Parade All-America Team.

Bone is already familiar with Aggie players including Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and All-Big 12 Second Teamer Danielle Adams.

“I followed the Aggies throughout the season and NCAA Tournament,” said Bone who is friends with Adams, Sydney Colson and fellow Class of 2009 signee Kristi Bellock of St. Rose, Louisiana. “I was happy to see the team do so well. Coach Blair is a great guy and his staff are very deserving of the success they saw this past season. I hope to add to the program any way I can and help them progress toward winning a national championship at A&M.”

As I walked into the arena all I saw was a sea of orange. I thought for a minute I was in Knoxville, not Memphis.
As expected, this game was going to be an intense battle. No one wanted to lose. There were many lead changes and much to cheer about for both teams. Brittney Griner looked like a veteran player on both ends. She ended the game with 27 points and 10 blocks. She made it very difficult for any Tennessee player to get into the paint.

An always passionate Coach Mulkey was at half-court at one point disagreeing with one of many no calls when Griner was getting hit.

Taber Spani tried to give Tennessee a spark in the first half with a three and steal. Shekinna Stricklen tried to use her athleticism to knock down shots (18 points). Morghan Medlock made all of the hard-nosed plays for Baylor. And Melissa Jones had two defensive plays down the stretch that sealed the deal. Her leadership definitely showed in the second half.

It was a rough shooting night for Tennessee sharp shooter Angie Bjorklund. She had a couple of plays that lifted the hopes of the fans, but just couldn’t find her usual rhythm. With 1:37 left in the game you could have heard a pin drop in the arena, unless you were one of the well-traveled Baylor fans.

The game came down to Griner doing exactly what she had to do, her teammates having the games of their careers, and the belief that they were going to win this game.

For Tennessee unfortunately missed free throws hurt along with the usual suspects having off shooting nights. Congratulations to Tennessee for a great season! And to Baylor for doing what not a lot of people except those in the locker room thought could be possible.

Duke vs. San Diego State, Box Score

The sea of orange thinned out quickly after their Tennessee’s to Baylor. Duke looked to have its usual support behind their bench.

SDSU traveled well considering where they came from, and they were rowdy! The Aztecs came out ready to play. They had the swagger and looks of an east coast team early on.

There was one player for Duke who was winning this game at all costs! Those of you who don’t know Jasmine Thomas, you will if Duke makes it to San Antonio. She was in a zone all day. With 9:27 left in the first half and a three point lead Thomas already had 10 points. As the game went back and forth and obvious that every possession counted, Baylor’s Griner was in the stands having grown men and women ask for autographs and pictures.

Allison Vernery picked up her third foul in the first half which allowed the SDSU players a chance to get to the rim. Quenese Davis and Jené Morris were two seniors that were not ready for their careers to be over. They each hit a couple of treys and made big defensive stops. Both played all 40 minutes.

SDSU went into the locker room down 34-35 at half. Coach McCallie must have ripped Duke a new one because they opened the half with three straight stops that led to points. It took SDSU until the 13:36 point to hit their first shot of the second half. The Duke bigs were not allowing anything in the paint. SDSU Senior guard Kim Spinardi got in late in the game and drained a three. Duke was able to convert 26 SDSU turnovers into 32 points. They were dominating on the boards all day. Thomas ended the game with 29 points and six assists.

To beat Baylor they will need to limit Griner’s touches and remember that it is a game of runs. For SDSU what a great run! A fun team to watch as a fan. They did not give up when the score got out of hand, but just kept pushing. Unfortunately, the ball was not falling and the Duke defense forced too many turnovers on this day. Beth Burns thanked the crowd on her way to the locker room for the support. She has much to be proud of with this team.

See you in San Antonio…

Baylor
The Baylor women’s basketball team had a rather relaxed atmosphere this afternoon at their open practice. Coach Mulkey did not say a whole lot to her team . She ran a couple of half court drills along with some 5-0 transition stuff. The most excitement came off of a Britney Griner one-handed dunk. As I walked across the gym to get closer to the action I looked up and saw my first Griner 360° dunk. There was no YouTube this time. It was pretty impressive. The team ended with a circle formation and Melissa Jones slammed the ball down…the whole team fell to the floor. It was as a fun way to end a light and relaxed shoot around.

Tennessee
The Tennessee faithful are in Memphis in full form. A handful of them showed up to the open practice. I was surprised atthe lack of shirts that were tucked in and the amount of diamond earrings in the player’s ears as they walked onto the court. I quickly understood why those small details did not matter today. Tennessee is a No. 1 seed for a reason. Coach Summit does not have to coach effort with these girls.… Read more

I was surprised atthe lack of shirts that were tucked in and the amount of diamond earrings in the player’s ears as they walked onto the court. I quickly understood why those small details did not matter today. Tennessee is a No. 1 seed for a reason. Coach Summit does not have to coach effort with these girls. They got more shots up and shots with a purpose in a small amount of time than any team I have ever seen. Coach Summit only had to get on her kids one time for not talking in a drill and it never had to happen again. It was funny to see the comedy on the team. Poor Briana Bass gets picked on all of the time but it is all in fun. The “bigs” had a good time shooting half court shots…and making some! This is definitely not Tennessee’s first time here.

San Diego State University
San Diego State University came into the gym with a ton of energy. Their open practice was a practice. Everyone was involved. The assistant coaches jumped into the drills and matched the level of intensity of the players. Good thing Duke doesn’t have to play against the assistants as well tomorrow! Jené Morris tweaked something in what looked like a hamstring at one point. She left the court for a while, but when she came back still had a lot of energy for her team. Coach Beth Burns looked like she was just ready to throw the ball up and play the game. Everything was structured and the team seemed to know exactly what was coming next. It was fun to watch the “underdog” show the fight that got them this far!

Duke
Duke came out of the tunnel with a business approach. They gave the fans a little taste of a variety of drills. Didn’t stay on anything for to long. Their kids looked a lot longer and more athletic in person which is scary. All of their coaches were working, but none ever had to be to loud. Again it looked like a business approach of–you know why you are here and you know what to do. I was excited to see what sweater Al Brown might have on, but he was in a polo and khakis.

In the far reaches of west Texas at the New Mexico and Mexico border is El Paso. The city where Richardson was born in 1941 sits 3,762 feet above sea level among a harsh desert landscape and rugged mountains with the Rio Grande River separating it from Mexico. Raised by his grandmother, he grew up in the tough “Segundo Barrio” also known as El Pujido–slang for “tough and rugged. They were the only black family in the oldest neighborhood in the city. His mother died when he was just three and his father, who was an alcoholic, passed away when Richardson was 12. But his grandmother had faith in her grandson telling him “you’re special” and that he would have a successful life.

He picked up Spanish (he speaks the language fluently) playing sports with his childhood friends and was the first black student to attend Bowie High School.

A standout player in high school, legendary coach Don Haskins recruited Richardson to play at the University of Texas-El Paso (then Texas Western College). Unfortunately, racism reared its ugly head in his playing days. Because of segregation, he was not allowed to attend movies or stay at the same hotels during team travel with his white teammates. And in a game against Centenary in Shreveport, La., Richardson did not play because his team’s opponent did not allow black athletes on its court.

“When I couldn’t go to the movies on my side of town, I’d just go across the border and go to the movies,” he said in an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “When I couldn’t ride the bus on my side of town, I’d go across the border and ride the bus. I’m very proud of where I was; I’m very proud that I know where I’ve been.”

His coaching career began at his high school alma mater, where he started to employ his famous “40 minutes of hell” strategy—stifling full court press and aggressive offense. He was the first black coach at a desegregated high school in Texas.

He continued to break barriers in the next stage of his career at the junior college level, becoming the first black coach at West Texas Junior College. He led them to the National Junior College Championship in 1980. And when he became the coach at the University of Tulsa in 1981, again he was the first black coach and guided the team to the National Invitational Championship in 1981.

During his four years in Tulsa, he cultivated a rabid fan base for his team and became a beloved member of the community known for the colorful polka-dotted shirts he wore at games. He did not mind that his attire made him stand out on the sidelines.

“I’ve always believed that a person in my position should be more than just a basketball coach,” he said in an interview with Sports Illustrated about his clothes. “With my visibility, I can help bring the community together. And especially as a black man, I can show people how to respect one another better.”

He speaks of this time in Tulsa with wistful nostalgia.

“I was very blessed and very fortunate to start over there in 1980,”he says in a phone interview. “I started off with a bang, winning a National Invitational Tournament and having the opportunity to create fan support. I was in love with the city.”

Tulsa, the site of the most violent race riot in American history, had its own share of problems related to race. The city boasts world-class arts facilities, a state of the art arena where a new WNBA team will play, and many other sources of civic pride. Yet the reverberations of the riot still haunt the area. It decimated the Greenwood neighborhood, site of the city’s famous “Black Wall Street.”

Nevertheless, Richardson excelled, posting a 119-37 overall record for a .763 winning percentage. He became the first coach in NCAA history to win 50 games in his first two seasons and led Tulsa to five postseason tournament appearances including two Missouri Valley Conference regular season titles.

During his last year at Tulsa his youngest daughter, 13 year-old Yvonne, was diagnosed with leukemia. At the time he was considering an open position at the University of Arkansas and was hesitant about accepting the job. But Yvonne encouraged him to take on coaching the Razorbacks and he left his family and headed to Fayetteville.

The Arkansas Years

Already a coaching phenom, armed with championships and the support of his family, Richardson would face the greatest challenges and tragedies of his life in Arkansas—from the entrenched racial animosity he faced as the first black coach in the Southwestern Conference (Arkansas did not join the SEC until 1991) to Yvonne’s death.

Even in 1985, many whites in Arkansas were not ready for a black coach to take over at their beloved school. Some were brutal, booing him during games. And he received his fair share of hate mail. Starting out the first season with a record of 12-16 did not help matters. The second year Richardson’s record improved to 19-14.

He was not only the coach of the men’s team, he became a confidant for black players on the women’s team who felt alienated at the school. In testimony before Congress on the lack of diversity in leadership positions in the NCAA in 2007, he said that the basketball players on the women’s team “often sought my help and support because they felt they had no one to turn to.”

“They felt they were discriminated against,” he said. “The women’s basketball coaching staff was white and the African American Coach they had, felt as if she was powerless and had no voice. No one would listen to the African American girls. I had to intervene on their behalf and go talk to their coach about their concerns.”

He also said that he did not receive the contracts and “enormous bonuses” that other coaches received even though he outperformed them. And in a dual role as Associate Athletic Director, he was frequently left out of meetings.

“As I inquired about the meetings and my duties, it seemed like a tremendous amount of effort was made to not include me,” he said “and I was often stonewalled. It became quite evident to me that I was experiencing ‘tokenism.’”

Eventually, he managed to gain widespread appreciation from fans across the state. He took the the team to six straight Sweet Sixteen appearances from 1990 – 1996.

During his last year at Arkansas, Richardson challenged the administration mid-season. With a 13-14 record, critics were once again breathing down his neck. His attackers included columnist John R. Starr who wrote for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the state’s most influential newspaper. Starr was relentless and once attacked Richardson in his column for three straight days in the week leading up to Arkansas’ national championship run in 1994. Nolan fought back and said he felt that if he were a white coach, he would be viewed in a different light.

“If they go ahead and pay me my money, they can take this job tomorrow,” he said. “I’m glad I don’t have to answer to really anyone but myself and my God upstairs. That’s the only people I answer to for real. I’ll answer to the chancellor and the athletic director, but fans and things of that nature, I don’t answer to those people.”

"President Bill Clinton Is High On His Hogs." Cover of the March 21, 1994 Sports Illustrated shortly before the Razorbacks made their title run.

His supporters not only included his college coach but former President Bill Clinton, also a frequent target of the Democrat-Gazette. In Taylor Branch’s book, The Clinton Tapes, he writes about the paper’s characterization of Richardson from Clinton’s viewpoint.

Headlines derided the coach (”Nolan wrong as rain”), while stories mocked his looks, diction and coaching style, which the paper variously called “rat ball,” “ghetto ball” and a “Globetrotters” carnival. “They did everything but call him a ‘nigger,’” said Clinton, adding that for him — and for Hillary, too — a crowning satisfaction of Arkansas’s first national basketball championship last month was getting to watch the Democrat-Gazette eat all the hateful things it had written about the victorious coach.”

Arkansas chose to dismiss Richardson and buy out his contract. He filed a lawsuit against the school, a few Arkansas officials and the Razorback Foundation claiming wrongful termination. He felt that he was punished for being outspoken and was subjected to racial discrimination. A judge dismissed the lawsuit in 2004.

After 17 years at Arkansas, Richardson was 389-169 (.697). Since then, Arkansas has never advanced past the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Students at Bonnabel High School in Kenner, La. gave Johnson a standing ovation. She was the district’s Most Valuable Player for three straight seasons.

H.O.P.E. adopted the Magnolia Woods Elementary School in East Baton Rouge last year and Johnson, a survivor of Hurricane Katrina, visited the campus Friday.

“Winning the championship has allowed me and my foundation (HOPE Foundation) to reach more people,” she said of the opportunity for her to make a positive impact in the community. “I’ve always given back since my days at LSU, but now, with the championship, it means that I can reach even more people. The looks on the faces of the children at the schools I visited, and at the nursing home meant so much to me. It’s hard to put it into words. I’m just happy that I’m able to do this, but I look forward to doing even more!”

Johnson (@Quickdeuce) tweeted about her activities and elation at being honored throughout the weekend.

LSU assistant coach Bob Starkey (@lsucoachstarkey) posted updates on Twitter as well, obviously proud of the former Lady Tiger.

The university honored Johnson Friday night in a ceremony that included a tribute video, a charity auction and comments from former players and LSU head coach Van Chancellor.

“The transition to Phoenix is what brought me here tonight,” Johnson said to the LSU crowd. “I want to thank everyone who has embraced me from LSU from Coach (Bob) Starkey to Coach Chancellor to Coach (Travis) Mays and Coach (Kenya-Larkin) Landers and of course the fans. Being a part of Lady Tiger basketball is something I will always be proud of and I will feel that way even when I am 40. This championship is for everyone here at LSU.”

The late Sue Gunter, the former LSU head coach and basketball legend recruited Johnson. "Temeka is a true point guard,” said Gunter in 2000.

While at LSU, she broke the school’s career assist record, was a two-time member of the All-SEC First Team and the All-Tournament team. She was the SEC Tournament MVP in 2003.

Johnson was the sixth overall pick in the 2005 WNBA draft and won the Rookie of Year during her first season as a pro with the Washington Mystics. The Mystics traded her to the Los Angeles Sparks in 2006. She joined the Phoenix Mercury after a trade this past spring.

From her USA Basketball days to her first head coaching job at Stephen F. Austin, Gunter was a pioneer for the sport of women’s basketball and her legacy carried beyond the court. She made her mark in 22 seasons at LSU, bringing the program to national prominence where it has since advanced to five NCAA Final Fours.

Gunter compiled a 442-221 mark with the Lady Tigers. Under her direction, LSU played in 14 NCAA Tournaments, four Elite Eights, eight Sweet 16s and won two Southeastern Conference Tournament titles. The crowning achievement came in her final season as she led the Lady Tigers to 27 wins and the program’s first NCAA Final Four appearance.

Gunter completed her career as the third winningest women’s coach in history with an overall record of 708-308. Today, those wins stand as the ninth-most in NCAA Division I history.

In 2005, she was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Those who knew Gunter best will say she was an even better person away from the game.

“There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of Coach Gunter and what she has meant to me personally as well as to Lady Tiger Basketball,” said LSU associate head coach Bob Starkey, who coached beside Gunter for six seasons. “The Sue Gunter Classic is a means for her to continue to help our program which would be important to her.”

The addition of the Gunter Classic now finalizes the LSU Lady Tiger schedule for 2009-10. LSU heads into the season returning four starters and nine letterwinners from a squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
