Training camp updates: Weekend recap

Two preseason games and a scrimmage are over. Veterans continue to return from overseas. Coaches have had a week to evaluate training camp invitees. This week? Roster shifts are imminent.

The East

In the east, teams rolled out training camp candy and made some roster moves in the latter part of last week.

The Atlanta Dream introduced a training camp vlog. Coco Miller, Shalee Lehnee and invitee Alison Bales are in camp. Former Georgia Tech player Australian Brigitte Ardossi received some media coverage from the large Melbourne daily The Age.

The Chicago Sky beat the Minnesota Lynx, 87-78, in an exhibition game at campus of Concordia University in St. Paul on Friday. Former New York Liberty player Shameka Christon scored 17 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point land. For the Lynx, former Virginia player and rookie Monica Wright led with 18 points. Spanish guard Nuria Martinez had 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Sky guard Kristi Toliver arrived in Chicago yesterday.

The Connecticut Sun face the Dream Tuesday, May 4 in team’s first-ever morning preseason game. Tipoff for the game is 11 a.m. ET at Mohegan Sun.

“Having a preseason game in the morning gives our fans a unique opportunity to see the Sun, one that has never happened before,” said Gwendolyn Pointer, director of marketing, on the team’s website. “Whether it is people taking time off from work or senior groups out enjoying the day, fans will have the opportunity to see great basketball while also enjoying one of the great dining options that are available at Mohegan Sun.”

The Indiana Fever waived Lyndra Littles and Armelie Lumanu. Littles was a training camp free agent signed in March. Lumanu was the club’s second-round draft pick out of Mississippi State.

Taj McWilliams-Franklin is set to arrive at New York Liberty training camp tomorrow.

The Washington Mystics added Jennifer Lacy to their training camp roster. The team waived Alysha Harvin and Jenna Smith. Lindsey Harding and Monique Currie arrived. Matee Ajavon is still overseas.

Out West

Star forward Candace Parker was in Cleveland watching her brother and her husband go against each other in the NBA playoffs. She tweeted and posted pictures throughout the game. She also used her Twitter powers to get fans to request Tia and Tamara Mowry attend a Sparks game this season. The twin actresses, most famous for their roles in the sitcom “Sister, Sister,” will be at the Staples Center this summer as Tia replied to Candace confirming her desire to see a game and expressing fandom.

The Phoenix Mercury lost to the Seattle Storm, 77-58, in an exhibition game. The Mercury traveled to Seattle with just eight players.
