For college seniors who are not in line to receive invitations to WNBA draft festivities shortly after the NCAA Division I basketball tournament, free agent camps provide an opportunity to get exposure in front of coaches and scouts.

Merit Management Group holds an invite-only camp during the Final Four each year for players to showcase their skills. WNBA coaches and front office personnel can evaluate talent and players can enhance their chances at obtaining a professional contract.

Since the camp began 15 years ago, 36 participants have signed contracts for WNBA team training camps or regular season play including forward Jennifer Lacy (Pepperdine). The Phoenix Mercury signed her in 2006 after she attended the free agent camp. Currently with the Tulsa Shock, she recently re-signed and agreed to a multi-year deal.

WNBA coaches and staff in attendance at the camp in recent years include Brian Agler (Seattle Storm), Dan Hughes (San Antonio Silver Stars), Penny Toler (general manager of the Los Angeles Sparks), Mike Thibault (Connecticut Sun) and many assistant coaches and team executives.

This year the camp takes place on Sunday, April 1 at Denver East High School. For more information visit the camp’s website: meritsports.com (camp application).
