Los Angeles gets road win and takes down Connecticut, Chicago continues win streak and beats Seattle

Los Angeles 87, Connecticut 81

The Los Angeles Sparks (7-1) beat the Connecticut Sun (6-2) on the first leg of a three-game road trip. Candace Parker nearly tallied a triple-double leading her team with 33 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists, five blocks and three steals. Rookie Nneka Ogwumike also put up great numbers with 18 points and five rebounds. Jantel Lavender came off the bench for 10 points and eight rebounds.

This was the first win for Los Angeles at Connecticut since July 24, 2010 (89-80). With the victory, the Sparks solidified their second place spot in the Western Conference standings. Undefeated Minnesota remains on top with a 9-0 record.

Tina Charles, who received the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award before the game, led the Sun with 19 points and 13 rebounds. She set a new franchise record with her 51st career double-double. She also extended her franchise record double-figure scoring streak to 20 games. Kara Lawson added 16 points and four assists while Asjha Jones scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Chicago 74, Seattle 58

Swin Cash’s former team had no luck on the road facing Chicago. The Sky (7-1) beat the Storm 74-58 and earned their sixth straight victory to continue the best start in franchise history. Epiphanny Prince led her team with 17 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and 15 rebounds, Tamera Young finished with 12 points while Ruth Riley contributed 10 points and four rebounds.

The Sky now sit atop the Eastern Conference. Connecticut is in second place, followed by Indiana (4-2).

For Seattle (1-7), Tina Thompson had 13 points and Ann Wauters contributed 12. The Storm are having their worst start in franchise history, losing their fourth straight game.
