Georgetown, Marquette, Seton Hall win in Day one of Big East Tournament

Eleventh seeded Georgetown overcame a record-breaking ten three-pointers by Tori Rule of Providence to move on in the Big East tournament, 81-61. Rule contributed 35 of her team’s 61 points, but a balanced Georgetown attack in which seven of eight players scored turned back the Friars. Sugar Rodgers led Georgetown with 26 points and ten rebounds, along with six assists.

“We won! It’s good to win,” a happy Keith Brown commented on his Hoyas’ victory. “We haven’t won in a while.” Georgetown will play Villanova in the final game of the night on Saturday at 8 pm.

Tenth seeded Marquette also was victorious, sending Pittsburgh off to the ACC with a 66-43 victory. Katie Young scored 11 points and seven rebounds, and Katherine Plouffe contributed 10 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists out of the post. Pittsburgh was led by Brianna Kiesel with 13 points. Marquette will play DePaul Saturday at 6 pm.

In the first game of the day, Seton Hall managed to prolong Anne Donovan’s time as head coach with a victory over Cincinnati, 60-55. Brittany Morris poured in 18, mostly from the foul line, to lead the Pirates, who will play St. John’s at noon Saturday.
