The San Antonio Silver Stars today signed forward Chelsea Poppens. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not announced.

Poppens, 6-2, was drafted by the Seattle Storm with the 18th overall pick in the second round of the 2013 WNBA Draft and appeared in two preseason games for the Storm.

“This is a great opportunity for Pop,” head coach Bill Fennelly said. “San Antonio is one of the best franchises in the WNBA, and Coach Hughes is one of the best coaches in the league. I know she will, as she did for us, go and compete every day and do all she can to make the team better.”

The Aplington, Iowa native played collegiately for Iowa State from 2009-13. In 126 career games, Poppens averaged 11.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 25.4 minutes. She became just the second player in school history to reach 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. She was named First Team All-Big 12 and Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American after both her junior and senior seasons.

The last Cyclone to sign with an NBA team was point guard Alison Lacey, who made the Seattle Storm’s final roster in 2010 after being drafted 10th overall by the Storm in the 2010 WNBA Draft.
