From the Storm:

The Seattle Storm today announced that the franchise has acquired guard Monica Wright from the Minnesota Lynx. In exchange, the Lynx will receive guard Renee Montgomery and the Storm’s 2016 WNBA Draft second-round selection.

“We took advantage of this unique opportunity to bring in a player with great athleticism and significant championship experience,” said Storm President and GM Alisha Valavanis. “We look forward to Monica’s contributions to the future of the Seattle Storm.”

The six-year veteran was a vital piece off the bench for the Lynx during their 2013 WNBA Championship run, averaging 9.0 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game that season. She holds career averages of 7.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists. She holds a career-high of 32 points (vs. Phoenix, 6/1/10), nine rebounds (at Indiana, 7/11/13) and seven assists (most recently vs. Atlanta, 7/22/14). She finished second in 2013 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year voting.

Wright underwent an arthroscopy on her right knee on July 16 in Minnesota, and is sidelined indefinitely. She played in seven games for the Lynx this season, averaging 2.1 points and 1.1 assists per game. She missed the first five games due to a strained right calf. Despite her recent injury challenges, Wright has played in 161 of Minnesota’s 185 regular-season games dating back to the start of the 2010 season.

Wright was drafted second overall by Minnesota in the 2010 WNBA Draft.

A 2010 graduate of Virginia, Wright was a three-time AP All-America selection (2008-10), and was named the 2010 ACC Player of the Year and 2007 ACC Rookie of the Year. She finished her career third all-time on the ACC scoring list and was the first Cavalier to be named ACC Defensive Player of the Year (2010).

“We are grateful to Renee for her contributions to the Storm during her time in Seattle,” said Valavanis. “We wish her the best with the Lynx.”

Montgomery, acquired by Seattle from Connecticut on Jan. 28, 2015, has averaged 7.1 points and 3.2 assists per game this season, leading the team in scoring on three occasions. The 5-7 guard was the 2012 Sixth Woman of the Year.
