Jewell Loyd of the Seattle Storm named the WNBA Rookie of the Month for July

Jewell Loyd of the Seattle Storm was named the WNBA Rookie of the Month presented for games played in July. Loyd led all rookies in points (10.5 ppg) and minutes (28.1 mpg), placed second in three-point field goal percentage (.462, 6-for-13) and free-throw percentage (.939, 31-for-33), and tied for fourth in assists (1.7 apg) for the month. Overall, she ranked third among all WNBA players in free-throw percentage. On July 15, Loyd had 13 points, four assists, four rebounds, and two steals in a 68-61 win over the visiting Los Angeles Sparks.

The first overall pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft recorded double figures in scoring in five of her 10 games played in July. The 5-10 guard from Notre Dame currently ranks second on the Storm in minutes (25.2 mpg) and third in scoring (8.9 ppg).

Highlights of Loyd’s month included:

  • July 8 vs. Indiana: Finished with 15 points, including 8-for-10 shooting from the free-throw line, in an 88-65 loss.
  • July 12 vs. Phoenix: Collected 16 points and two assists in a 70-60 loss.
  • July 15 vs. Los Angeles: Posted 13 points, four rebounds, two steals, and two assists in a 68-61 win.

Despite Loyd’s performances, the Storm (5-16) are mired in a four-game losing streak and currently stand last in the West.
