Transfer from South Carolina, guard Shay Colley, lands at Pitt

Pittsburgh head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio announced the addition of South Carolina transfer Shay Colley to the program. Colley enrolled at Pitt this semester and will have to sit out until the end of the fall 2016 semester per NCAA guidelines.

“We are thrilled to have Shay in the Pitt family,” said McConnell-Serio. “She has played at a high level and has a great deal of experience. She is an outstanding point guard who makes everyone around her better. We look forward to her practicing with the team and learning our system until she can be in a Pitt uniform.”

According to the South Carolina release announcing her departure, the native of Brampton, Ontario, “cited a desire to be closer to home as her reason for leaving the program.”

From the Pitt release:

One of the nation’s top recruits in 2015, Colley has experienced tremendous success on the international stage, which includes spending four seasons with the Canadian National Team.

Colley helped Team Canada to a second place finish at the 2014 FIBA U18 Americas Championship by averaging 12.8 points, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game. Included in that was a 21-point effort against USA in group play.

Colley attended St. Edmund Campion Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario, and led her team to a pair of regional championships in 2010 and 2011, as well as a gold medal in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) in 2014.

Colley appeared in 11 games for No. 2 South Carolina and was averaging 12.9 minutes per game before joining the Panthers.

The Panthers are in action this Sunday when they host No. 16/14 Florida State at the Petersen Events Center. Tip is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
