West Virginia signee Kristina King named NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Year

From the NJCAA:

Kristina King.
Fueling Gulf Coast State’s drive to its fourth national championship, Kristina King was honored Wednesday with the Spalding NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Year Award from the NJCAA DI Women’s Basketball Committee.

Boasting a 6-foot-3 frame with the speed of most guards, King’s exceptional athleticism anchored the Commodores in their run to the NJCAA title. The sophomore forward compiled a 54.2 field goal percentage to lead Gulf Coast State with 19.1 points per game – ranking 18th in the nation. King’s tenacious play on the boards yielded 8.8 rebounds per game, including an average of 3.7 on the offensive end of the floor. She showcased quick hands on defense, averaging 2.1 steals per game for the season.

In four victories at the NJCAA DI Women’s Basketball Championship, King was recognized as one of the top players with her awarding of co-tournament MVP. The Mebane, North Carolina, native averaged 20.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game for the week. In Gulf Coast State’s 63-47 win over Trinity Valley (Texas) in the national title game, King finished with a double-double – 13 points and 13 rebounds – and tallied a career-high five blocks defensively.

With 12 double-double performances on the year, King provided the Commodores with a consistent level of productivity throughout the schedule. Her play was taken to another level, however, in a mid-February, 87-65 victory at Northwest Florida State. She hit 12 of 20 shots from the floor for 30 points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds that included nine offensive boards – another career mark.

Completing her second season at Gulf Coast State, King is ready to start the next chapter in her collegiate playing career. She will transition to the Big 12 Conference next season after inking with West Virginia in November during the early signing period.
