Moriah Jefferson named the recipient of the 2016 Dawn Staley Award

Moriah Jefferson, University of Connecticut’s Senior Guard, has been named the recipient of the 2016 Dawn Staley Award.

“The Dawn Staley Award is given to the most outstanding collegiate guard in the country; a player who exemplifies the skills that Dawn possessed during her career (ball handling, scoring, her ability to distribute the basketball and her will to win).” says Michael G. Horsey, Founder of the Phoenix Club of Philadelphia. “Moriah Jefferson is the quintessential guard of our game. There’s not a more deserving guard who impacts the game on both sides of the ball.

Moriah Jefferson, a 5-7 senior guard from the University of Connecticut, is the sixth ever Husky to be chosen as the American Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year. The UConn Husky and Glenn Heights Texas native, was named AP first team All-American this year. Moriah helped lead her team to a perfect conference record (18-0) and an American Conference championship, while earning first team All-Conference honors. Moriah averaged 12.6 points a game and led her team in assists (192) steals (93) while shooting 55.2% from the floor.

Dawn Staley will present the award to Moriah Jefferson during the Phoenix Club of Philadelphia’s Dawn Staley Award luncheon on Friday, April 22, 2016, at the prestigious Union League of Philadelphia.
