Connecticut beats SMU, breaks own NCAA record for consecutive wins

Connecticut (16-0, 4-0 AAC) defeated Southern Methodist 88-48 on the road in Dallas breaking its own NCAA record for consecutive wins at 91. With the victory over SMU (10-7, 1-3), the Huskies surpassed their previous record of 90. UConn remains undefeated in American Athletic Conference play with a record of 58-0 since the conference was founded in 2013.

“Congratulations to Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies on the sustained excellence it has taken to establish a new consecutive games won record,”said Anucha Browne, the NCAA Vice President of Women’s Basketball Championships, in a statement. “Even though they make it look easy at times, 91 wins and counting is an unbelievable accomplishment. It is saying something when you have broken the all-time consecutive games won record three times. To have won over 70 games in a row three times over the last 14 years is a testament to the UConn student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans who continue to fuel the program. Kudos to the UConn women’s basketball program for continuing to raise the bar for the rest of the sport.”

Katie Lou Samuelson led UConn with 28 points. Napheesa Collier scored 19 points along with a career-high 16 rebounds. Gabby Williams contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds and six assists.

Alicia Froling paced SMU with 16 points plus 12 rebounds.

Connecticut heads one state north to face Tulsa on Tuesday. SMU goes on the road to face Cincinnati on the same day.
