Dallas Wings center Ruth Hamblin will miss 2017 WNBA season to compete for Canadian National Team roster spot

Dallas Wings center Ruth Hamblin will miss the 2017 WNBA season in order to train with and compete for a roster spot on the Canadian National Team ahead of the the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.1 The winner of the World Cup earns an automatic berth to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“We support Ruth in pursuing her lifelong dream of representing her country in international competition,” said Wings general manager Greg Bibb in a statment. “We wish her and her teammates the best as they train and begin the qualification process.”

Hamblin was a 2016 second-round draft pick. She played 20 games in her first season with the Wings, averaging 1.5 rebounds per game, and .45 blocks per contest. The Houston, British Columbia native is currently playing overseas in Australia for the Perth Wildcats.
