List of July 2017 Recruiting Events || 2017-18 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Recruiting Calendar

July marks the end of the NCAA’s annual recruiting calendar for women’s basketball. It is a busy time for college coaches with dozens of tournaments on tap in July’s two evaluation periods.

The final recruiting month for the NCAA calendar is also very expensive with event entry fees and packet prices ranging from $100 to over $500. To make budget matters worse, some events require that programs purchase a packet per coach in addition to the entry fee per coach.

The entire cost just to enter one single tournament could reach into several thousand dollars per program. Add airfare, car rental, hotel and food costs on top of that and attending even a couple of events could be a strain on small programs and state universities with tight athletic budgets.

Furthermore, some events are riddled with horrible execution such as incomplete packets and lopsided games with elite youth basketball leagues (EYBL) that have major sponsors and ranked players competing against non-EYBL teams with less talent. (Note: there have been tournaments where non-EYBL teams beat EYBL teams).

Coaches keep a sense of humor, sometimes laced with sarcasm, when documenting their recruiting travails on social media. This summer, fans saw the usual tweets about overconfident players, out-of-pocket parents, inappropriate behavior by coaches and more. Some coaches were upset about the cover of one tournament packet that included an image of Donald Trump’s face superimposed on a photo of Hulk Hogan along with other questionable cover images.

Attendees at “The National Championship” event at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta had to contend with a burst pipe due to an HVAC malfunction according to the organizer. Games had to be relocated to another court.

Given the exorbitant costs of attending these events where coaches may see the same team participating in multiple tournaments, is it worth it for programs to spend so much money trying to get to as many events as possible? Are the event organizers taking advantage of college programs? Should coaches be really invested in events that provide organizers with lucrative profits?
