The NCAA announced the latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of all Division I institutions. According to the most recent GSR data, based on graduate classes from 2014 to 2017, 87 percent of Division I freshmen scholarship student-athletes earned a degree.

The NCAA developed the GSR as a response to college and university presidents who wanted graduation data that reflects the mobility of college students:

Both the Graduation Success Rate and the Academic Success Rate account for the academic outcomes of student-athletes who transfer from one institution to another. The rate compiled using the federal government’s methodology does not count transfers in and counts transfers out as graduation failures. Regardless of which rate is used, student-athletes are shown to graduate at a higher rate than their peers in the general student body.

Overall, the GSR increased one percentage compared to last season. The overall rate is up one percentage point from last year. Women’s basketball matched its GSR record-high at 92 percent. In addition, 112 women’s basketball programs had a GSR of 100 percent for 2017.

From the NCAA’s summary of the GSR:

The rate in women’s basketball jumped three points to 92 percent, which is tied the highest rate ever recorded. This is attributable to a six percentage point jump among African-American women in basketball. Their rate climbed to 90 percent.
