Sport Tours International/Hoopfeed NCAA DI Top 25 Poll for Dec. 19, 2017: Stanford falls six spots, Villanova and Green Bay move up

UConn still reigns while Stanford tumbles

In a week of milestones and upsets, Connecticut remained the unanimous No. 1 in the Sport Tours International/Hoopfeed poll for the fourth straight week. Tuesday night, UConn’s head coach Geno Auriemma reached the 1,000-career win mark with an 88-64 victory over Oklahoma.

Earlier in the day, North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell, a three-time national champion, also notched 1,000 victories.

“You know the first 12 were the hardest of all 1,000 of them trust me,” said Auriemma on his early head coaching career postgame with his first-ever team at UConn in attendance. “It’s a great memory I have of that group. They were so excited, so happy and I have never seen a bunch of kids happier to get 12 wins. To see them today and see where they have been, they still carry it around with them and they’ll always be part of this.”

There were no changes in the rest of the top five as Louisville, Notre Dame, Mississippi State and South Carolina round out the elite group. Baylor, Texas and West Virginia follow with Oregon and UCLA tied at No. 10.

The week was not a good one for Florida State and Stanford. The Seminoles suffered their first defeat of the season at Texas on Sunday. The loss led to a drop of three places in the poll for FSU and the team landed at No. 14.

Stanford stumbled a whopping six places to No. 24 after a stunning home defeat at the hands of unranked Western Illinois Monday night. The Leathernecks earned a hard fought 71-64 victory, overcoming a nine-point halftime deficit to overtake the Cardinal in the fourth quarter. It was the first-ever win for WIU over a ranked opponent in program history.

Undefeated teams in the poll include UConn, Louisville (the team with the most wins at 13-0), Mississippi State, Tennessee, West Virginia and Villanova. Other teams that received votes: Iowa, Rutgers, Syracuse, Southern California and Ball State.

The STI/Hoopfeed Poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of media members and other women’s basketball professionals. Total points are based on 25 points for first place through one point for 25th.
