STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford Cardinal (11-7, 5-1) continued their winning ways in conference play at home with a 71-45 victory over the Washington Huskies (6-11, 0-6), sweeping the teams from the Evergreen State (the Cardinal defeated Washington State Jan. 12).

Cardinal senior forward Kaylee Johnson (8 points, 12 rebounds, 5 blocks) was an igniter for the second game in a row for her team. Following up on Friday’s contest, she scored the first bucket of the game again along with the team’s initial six points as well as three rebounds and a block in the opening three and a half minutes of the first quarter. Her career-high five swats complemented her nearly 11th double-double performance.

“I think this was the weekend for Kaylee! She gets my vote for Stanford Player of the Week,” head coach Tara VanDerveer expressed about Johnson’s feat. “Her leadership, her rebounding, her aggressiveness, taking good shots, just battling out there.”

Senior forward Alanna Smith led Stanford in scoring with 19 points and grabbing nine rebounds, taking over in the second half, notching 14 of her game high in the last two quarters. But Smith gave Johnson credit for the great start.

“The aggressiveness that Kaylee shows is contagious and the rest of our team kinda catches on,” Smith said of her teammate’s performance.

Fellow upperclassman Brittany McPhee chipped in 15 points, while sophomore guard DiJonai Carrington contributed 11 points, five rebounds and five assists in 27 minutes of play off the bench.

“I think I bring a lot of energy and a lot of aspects to the court for the team,” Carrington said about her contribution. “It’s my job to try to trickle in wherever is needed, and today we needed assists. We needed to make that extra pass for the open man, and I am glad I was able to help in that aspect, but my teammates knocked down shots…so that was really helpful for me to pack my stats.”

Stanford shot 49 percent from the field and won by 26, but it took a 40-22 second half run to comfortably improve on an eight-point halftime lead.

Washington senior guard, Jenna Moser led her team in scoring with 14 points, including 10 in the second half. Redshirt-junior, Hannah Johnson, added 10 points.

The Cardinal head south to Los Angeles next, taking on USC January 19, and two days later they battle the UCLA Bruins.

The Huskies will take on in-state rival Washington State in a home-and-home scenario, January 17 in Pullman, and January 21 at home in Seattle.
