Sunday’s Stanford at Washington State game cancelled due to the passing of Cougars’ director of strength and conditioning David Lang

Saturday evening Washington State announced that a longtime member of the athletic department,  director of strength and conditioning David Lang, passed away suddenly earlier in the day. As a result, the regular season women’s basketball finale against Stanford has been cancelled. The game was scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.

Statement from WSU:

The Washington State University Athletic Department was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Director, Strength and Conditioning David Lang Saturday afternoon. Lang was a member of the WSU Athletic Department for 20 years.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lang Family,” said WSU Director of Athletics Patrick Chun. “David was beloved and respected by our entire department. He impacted and positively changed the lives of countless Washington State student-athletes during his two decades of service. He will forever remain in our hearts and will be dearly missed.”

Lang worked closely with many of WSU’s roughly 450 student-athletes, but worked directly with the women’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf programs. Due to this heartbreaking news, and in consultation with both Stanford University and the Pac-12 Conference, Sunday’s women’s basketball game against Stanford has been cancelled.

Once again, our hearts go out to the Lang Family at this very difficult time.

Statement from Stanford:

“Our deepest sympathies go out to David’s loved ones, his wife Brigitta and their children,” Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer said. “Everyone associated with women’s basketball is part of an extremely close, extended family and receiving this news was absolutely devastating. Washington State may be our opponent at times on the court, but June, her staff and players are our dear friends and have our love and support during this difficult time.”

The teams will return to action next weekend for the Pac-12 tournament in Seattle.
