Syracuse and Cal move up in Sport Tours International/Hoopfeed NCAA DI Top 25 Poll; Drake enters at No. 23
Drake (6-1) broke into the third Sport Tours International/Hoopfeed Poll of the season after a 90-85 overtime victory over No. 18 South Carolina Saturday night at the Vancouver Showcase in British Columbia.
Even though Drake had a slow start in the overtime period, the Bulldogs erased a four-point deficit to come out on top to beat their SEC opponent. The win marked the first-ever win for Drake in four meetings between the programs.
Redshirt junior forward Sara Rhine led Drake with a game-high 25 points, including 15 after halftime. Her efforts helped earn her this week’s Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honor for the third consecutive week.
South Carolina (3-3), a former top ten team, dropped four places in the poll after a horrible week which saw the Gamecocks lose to Oregon State as well. The dry spell comes after South Carolina fell to No. 7 Maryland (6-0) in the previous week.
There were no changes in the teams that make up the top ten. The only movement was Baylor (6-0) moving up one place to No. 4 while Louisville (5-0) dropped a spot to No. 5. Both the Bears and the Cardinals played in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout in Las Vegas over the holiday weekend. Baylor survived feisty South Dakota State, 72-66, to open the tourney and routed Georgetown, 67-46, the next day.
Friday, Louisville had a close call with No. 19 Arizona State (3-2) in a 58-56 victory that was decided in the last seconds. The Cardinals routed Hartford, 86-69, the next day to end their stint in Vegas. Arizona State finished the tournament racing past Southern Illinois, 82-38.
Every team in the top ten is undefeated. except for No. 9 Oregon State. The Beavers suffered a 91-81 setback at the hands of No. 1 Notre Dame Saturday night in the championship game of the Vancouver Showcase.
California (6-0) increased its upward trajectory in the poll, landing at No. 15 this week, an improvement of three spots. The Golden Bears traveled to San Diego and defeated Tulane as well as the host team in the San Diego Thanksgiving Tournament.
No. 12 Syracuse (6-1) also had a banner week, moving up three places as well. The Orange earned wins over Kansas State, Princeton and DePaul.
Minnesota continues to have an impressive run under new head coach and recently retired WNBA player, Lindsay Whalen. The Gophers are now 5-0 and beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Cornell last week.
The last two places in the poll include newcomers Kentucky (7-0) and Iowa State (5-0).
