Top ten changes in Sport Tours International/Hoopfeed NCAA DI Top 25 Poll; Minnesota enters at No. 25

The second Sport Tours International/Hoopfeed Poll of the season comes on the heels of some surprising upsets among top 25 teams. While the top three teams remain the same with Notre Dame, UConn and Oregon holding strong at the summit, this week’s No. 14 South Carolina fell out of the top ten.

The Gamecocks had to fight off Clemson Thursday in a game where they committed copious turnovers and displayed an anemic offense including shooting just 1-of-21 from three-point land. A few days later Sunday night, this week’s No. 7 Maryland took down South Carolina 85-61 on the Gamecocks’ home floor. The Terrapins used a prolific offensive spurt from the end of the first period and into the second quarter to build a sizable lead that they did not relinquish. Maryland’s win over South Carolina led to the Terrapins moving up two spots.

Every team in the top ten is undefeated. No. 6 Mississippi State enjoys a 4-0 record and raised the team’s 2018 National Finalist banner before demolishing Coppin State Sunday.

North Carolina State and South Florida both moved up four places in the poll. The Wolfpack are on a four-game winning streak with recent wins over Vanderbilt and Radford.

South Florida capped the week with a triumph over the Big 12’s Oklahoma. The Bulls earned the victory without the team’s leading scorer Kitija Laksa who suffered meniscus and ACL tears last Thursday. Laura Ferreira picked up the slack with a career-record eight 3-pointers to help reach her career scoring high of 34 points.

California also made impressive strides in the poll, moving up five places to No. 18. The Golden Bears finished a grueling road trip beating Penn State and BYU before returning back to the Bay Area and taking down West Coast Conference foe Pacific Sunday afternoon. The game was relocated to Maples Pavilion on Stanford’s campus because smoke infiltrated Cal’s Haas Pavilion due to wildfires in Northern California.

Georgia fell completely out of the poll, with a steep drop from No. 14. The Bulldogs lost two straight games to unranked teams, first to UCLA last Wednesday then to intrastate rival Georgia Tech on Sunday.

Missouri also took a tumble, falling six places to No. 22. Green Bay beat the Tigers 56-49 Friday night on Missouri’s home floor.

Minnesota entered the poll at No. 25. Under new head coach and retired WNBA player, Lindsay Whalen, the Gophers are off to a promising start with a 3-0 record.
