The Connecticut Sun acquired the Los Angeles Sparks’ first round pick in the 2020 WNBA draft in exchange for  6-4 forward Chiney Ogwumike. The first overall pick in the 2014 draft, Ogwumike played three seasons for the Sun. The trade reunites Chiney with her older sister Nneka, the top draft pick in 2012. Both are graduates of Stanford University.

“We would like to thank Chiney Ogwumike for her contributions to our organization since 2014,” Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller said. “We wish her well with her career and expanding her off court interests.”

Last season, Ogwumike was an All-Star and averaged 14.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. She also shot 60.3% from the field, the third highest mark in the league.

“Chiney Ogwumike is one of the most athletic, versatile and efficient frontcourt players in the WNBA,” Sparks executive vice president and general manager Penny Toler said. “Chiney provides us additional inside scoring, rebounding and rim protection. She will be a great addition to our roster.”

The Sun opens the season on Saturday, May 25 against the Washington Mystics.  The Sparks’ home opener is May 31 against the Connecticut Sun.
