Chicago Sky coach Steven Key resigns

wnba-chicago-sky-los-angeles-sparks-1The Chicago Sky announced the resignation of head coach  and general manager Steven Key today. The team had a disappointing season and failed to make the playoffs for the fifth straight year. The Sky is the only WNBA team that has never qualified for the postseason play.

“I enjoyed and appreciated my time with the Chicago Sky. Now is the right time for me and my family to move on to new opportunities,” said Key in a statement. “I wish the Sky athletes and franchise much success in the future.”

Key joined the Sky during its inaugural season in 2006. He was an assistant for two years become becoming the GM and head coach in 2008. Since then he compiled a 42-60 record.

The Sky finished the season 14-20, last in the Eastern Conference. Chicago lost its last game to the team with the worst record in 2010, the Tulsa Shock (6-28).

“We thank Steven for all of his efforts and accomplishments in helping to develop this young franchise,” said Sky owner Michael Alter. “We wish him all the best in his new endeavors.”
