Three-team trade sends veteran Katie Smith to the Seattle Storm

Two-time WNBA champion and three-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Smith is no longer a player for the Washington Mystics. She joins the Seattle Storm after a three-team trade that also involved the Indiana Fever.

The details of the trade:

  • Seattle receives: Guard Katie Smith, Forward Jacinta Monroe, 2012 second-round pick (from Indiana)
  • Indiana receives: Guard Erin Phillips, 2012 third-round pick (from Seattle)
  • Washington receives: Guard Jasmine Thomas, 2012 first-round pick (from Seattle), 2012 third-round pick (from Indiana)
  • Waived: To make room for Erin Phillips on its training camp roster, the Fever waived 2011 third-round pick Jori Davis

Indiana Fever Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Kelly Krauskopf
“The opportunity to acquire Erin Phillips is significant for our team. She is a strong combo guard who brings quality depth to our point guard and off-guard positions. She is a young but experienced player in the WNBA and internationally. I am thrilled to be adding her to our backcourt.”

Seattle Storm Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Brian Agler
“This is a trade that benefits all three teams. That being said, in Katie Smith we are adding a great player, a great person, someone who is a tremendous competitor to a team full of competitors. Obviously we have some elite players on our team with Sue (Bird), Swin (Cash) and Lauren (Jackson) as well as some good young players coming up. Katie fits right into that group. She is the type of player and person who is going to give us quality depth and versatile lineups on the floor.”

Washington Mystics General Manager and Head Coach Trudi Lacey
“I am very pleased to have Jasmine join the Washington Mystics organization. She is an athletic point guard who can pressure the ball and offensively can create her own shot. She is the ultimate team player and she will complement an already talented back court. We look forward to an exciting 2011 season.”
