The air is getting colder, the leaves are changing color and the WNBA regular season is coming to a close. All sure signs that the women’s college basketball season is coming up fast! The preseason rankings are starting to come out and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association released the preseason “Wade Watch List” this week.

At the top of the Wade Trophy watch list is Brittney Griner, Baylor’s 6-8 center, who is finally a senior. Griner is not the only returnee for the Lady Bears. Kimetria Hayden, Jordan Madden, Brooklyn Pope, and Destiny Williams are all returning seniors. Lady Bears junior guard Odyssey Sims is also on the Wade watch List.

Head coach Kim Mulkey was one of the success stories of last season, coaching her team to that 40-0 record and the national title. She further won the respect of many by coaching the end of the tournament with Bell’s Palsy, a form of temporary facial paralysis.

For the second straight year, Dishin & Swishin is proud to begin it’s NCAA women’s basketball coverage with an interview with the coach of the defending national champions. Last year it was Texas A&M’s Gary Blair, and today it is Baylor’s coach Mulkey.

We had a great discussion, recapping last season’s run to the title and 40-0 record, and getting ready for this season. We talked about Brittney, the college student, the long boarder, the wrist injury, and the decision to skip USA Basketball this summer.

You can find out about the talented incoming freshmen joining the squad, Alexis Prince, Niya Johnson, Kristina Higgins, Chardonae Fuqua’, and Destiny Brown.

We discussed a schedule that begins in earnest with Kentucky going to Waco November 13, followed by Stanford in Hawaii three days later. December brings games with Notre Dame and Tennessee. The Big 12 season highlights January, including newcomer Mike Carey and West Virginia in Waco January 19. Should they survive all of that undefeated still, perhaps the biggest test will be the February 18 matchup in Hartford, Connecticut against Geno Auriemma’s Connecticut Huskies.

Does Mulkey have an interest in coaching the Olympic team? What if Griner, Sims and former Baylor star and WNBA player Sophia Young are on the 2016 squad? How does she feel about the conference realignments and the shifting landscape of conference play? Will she sing a duet with Trace Adkins at first night?

It’s going to be a fun college basketball season, and Dishin & Swishin will be with you all the way through until the nets are cut down in New Orleans.
