No. 6 Stanford (6-1) defeated Florida Gulf Coast 83-59 Wednesday afternoon during their second game of the Hardwood for Hope Tournament in Puerto Vallarta to give head coach Tara VanDerveer her 900th career win.

She is just the fifth Division I women’s coach to record 900 victories. She joins Pat Summitt (1,098), Sylvia Hatchell (908), C. Vivian Stringer (905) and Jody Conradt (900).

“I don’t like to be the center of attention,” said VanDerveer in a release. “I’m just fine being the person behind the scenes. It is not about me. I have such terrific help around me. And we have great players. I know it’s a big number and I’m kind of like, ‘How did this happen?’ I’m not that old.”

Chiney Ogwumike led Stanford with 27 points and 13 rebounds.  The Cardinal dominated Florida Gulf Coast (3-3) the entire game racing out to an early lead with a 45-28 advantage at the half.
