The WNBA season ended earlier than Sue Bird is used to. In her twelve years of playing in the WNBA, Seattle Storm teams led by Bird at the point made the playoffs ten times.

After sitting out last season with injuries, Bird returned to the only WNBA team she has ever played for, hoping to team up with her longtime teammate Lauren Jackson to lead the Storm back to playoff glory. However things did not work out that way, with Jackson missing yet another season with injuries, leaving the Storm lacking in depth and star power to compete in a loaded Western Conference.

The end result was a 12-22 record, tied for the worst record in the WNBA along with Tulsa, and a shot at the top spot in Thursday night’s draft lottery. For Bird, coming back from injury, statistically her numbers were down this season; only once in her career Bird averaged less than this season (10.7 points per game), and her average assists was the lowest of her career.

Still, Bird was named an All-Star, and had games where the skills and talents that made her the premier point guard in the WNBA showed through, especially during a late stretch where the Storm won three in a row, giving the Storm Crazies something to cheer about.

It is a pleasure to welcome Sue Bird back to Dishin & Swishin this week!

Some of the topics covered include:

  • Storm season in review
  • Phoenix and Minnesota, who is the class in the brutal Western Conference
  • USA Basketball, the world championships, and being the mentor to the young talent available
  • UConn’s national championship, the relationship among former players, playing for Geno Auriemma.

And more! So get ready for the first round of the WNBA playoffs with one of the legends of the game, Sue Bird. Enjoy the podcast!
