Connecticut Sun forward Chiney Ogwumike undergoes knee surgery

From the Sun:

Connecticut Sun forward Chiney Ogwumike underwent successful microfracture knee surgery today. She is expected to have a full recovery after an extended rehabilitation period of approximately six months. Dr. Walter Lowe, renowned orthopedic surgeon and team doctor of the NFL Houston Texans, NCAA University of Texas at Austin, and NBA Houston Rockets, performed the microfracture on Ogwumike.

The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year and top overall pick in the 2014 draft had a small lesion in her articular cartilage. Microfracture involves the setting of a cartilage “matrix” from a donor (i.e., a cadaver) into the lesion, to promote the growth of new cartilage that far more closely approximates the natural material (hyaline cartilage). A gluelike man-made protein is then applied to seal it.

There are a number of indicators that make someone a better patient for microfracture, including youth, size of lesion, strict adherence to a rehabilitation regimen, and being a non-smoker. Ogwumike’s youth (22), small lesion, and being a non-smoker all fall in favor with a successful recovery. Further, Ogwumike’s diligence and focus on her rehabilitation regimen indicate that all factors point towards a successful microfracture and recovery.

Ogwumike added, “This is new territory for my family and I, but I am not one to shy away from challenges. I have met every life challenge with an optimistic point of view, therefore this is an obstacle I know I will overcome. I have the best support system, both personally and professionally, so I know I will emerge from this experience a more confident and determined player.”

Connecticut Sun Quotes on the surgery

Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko:

“Chiney had an amazing rookie season and we were excited about watching her progress in 2015. However, our only concern now is her health and well-being.”

Head Coach Anne Donovan:

“At the moment, Chiney’s health is our only concern. I know the decision to have this procedure was not an easy one, but it needed to be done. We know with complete certainty that Chiney will work hard to get back into top form.”
