NCAA Graduation Success Rate continues to climb, at 89 percent for DI women’s basketball players

The NCAA announced the latest Graduation Success Rates (GSR) today for Division I programs. The GSR measures the proportion of student-athletes on a team earning a college degree. The newest figures are for students who began college in 2008.

The Division I Board of Directors created the GSR in 1995 in response to college and university presidents who wanted a rate that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students than the federal graduation rate.

The GSR formula, intended to be a more complete and accurate look at student-athlete success, does not include student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible. It does include student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere.

The federal graduation rate (FGR), however, remains the only metric that allows comparison between student-athletes and the general student body.

• The GSR for Division I college athletes is now 86 percent – two points over last year and the highest rate ever.
• Overall, women’s basketball student-athletes earned degrees at an 89-percent rate, a two-point increase over last year.
• For women’s basketball, 98 programs have a perfect 100 percent GSR.
• Student-athletes outperform their peers in the student body by two percent. The federal rate for Division I student-athletes rose one point to 67 percent, the highest rate ever. The student body federal graduation rate remained flat at 65 percent.
• When compared using the federal graduation rate, Division I student-athletes continue to outpace their peers in the student body. The federal rate for Division I student-athletes rose one point to 67 percent, the highest rate ever. The student body federal graduation rate remained flat at 65 percent.
