The Los Angeles Sparks signed free agent and WNBA veteran Cappie Pondexter.

“We are very excited about having Cappie join our team,” Sparks executive vice president and general manager Penny Toler said. “She has the ability to play both guard positions. She is a fierce competitor with championship pedigree.”

The 5-foot-9 guard was selected second overall in the 2006 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury, where she went on to become a two-time WNBA Champion (2007, 2009). In 2010, she was traded to the New York Liberty and then traded to the Chicago Sky in 2015. Last season she averaged 9.6 points per game, 4.3 assists per contest and 2.9 rebounds per game.

“To be born in the state of California and to then finish my basketball career here, I’m more than thrilled,” Pondexter said “I’ve always joked with coach Agler that I’d end up playing for him and words can’t describe how happy I am to actually have the opportunity. The Sparks has been one of the frontier teams since the inception of the WNBA and I’m blessed to leave my mark in its history books.”
