Young Baylor team takes down Duke, 51-48

Coach Kim Mulkey on her young team:

The thing I get to do is coach kids that believe in what we do and allow me to get on them, challenge them and they never quit playing. You never saw a Baylor kid quit playing today. Morghan Medlock is a senior and I am sure what was going through her mind; she is thinking I am sitting over here on the bench and this could be my last game. She never questioned. She cheered and understood I was going with a smaller line up.

Stanford survives Xavier, 55-53

Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer on her team’s perseverance:

That was a really tough game. I want to compliment Xavier on just how physical they were. Every stat, whether it was turnovers or [offensive rebounds], it was just that kind of game, so close. It had to be very tough. They had two great looks at the basket at the end, but going down the stretch I was really please with the poise people showed. A done mega-deal: Cappie heads to the Big Apple

By Cheryl Coward at 30 March, 2010, 4:47 pm

News broke last night that WNBA star and Phoenix Mercury guard Cappie Pondexter was the superglue of a major three-team trade. Rumors of the deal surfaced weeks ago with speculation that Pondexter demanded the trade or would sit out the season.

Terms of the deal include the Liberty sending forwards Shameka Christon and Cathrine Kraayeveld to the Chicago Sky. In exchange, New York receives Chicago’s 2010 2nd round draft pick (No. 16).  Chicago sends forward Candice Dupree to Phoenix.

“The Liberty is thrilled to have acquired Cappie Pondexter, one of the top players in the world, in what is truly a franchise changing acquisition. Rarely do you get the opportunity to trade for a player of this magnitude, as Cappie is a proven winner with championship experience and a perennial WNBA All-Star,” said Liberty president and general manager Carol Blazejowski in a statement. “Both Shameka and Cathrine have been important members of the Liberty, and we wish them great success in the future and thank them for all of their contributions to the franchise.”

Liberty head coach Anne Donovan will only coach the team for one more summer. Seton Hall announced Monday that she is the new coach of its women’s basketball team. Seton hall finished the 2009-2010 season in last place in the Big East conference. They recently fired… Read more

Monday tidbits: Obama’s bracket life, the return of Pokey (?), and an overpaid AD

By Cheryl Coward at 29 March, 2010, 11:35 am

Obama’s bracket still alive, barely

President Obama’s bracket on ESPN is only half busted. Two of his teams are still in the mix, Connecticut and Stanford. However, his other Final Four choices, Tennessee and Nebraska, suffered losses this past weekend. He picked UConn to win it all.

Tonight on television

Baylor vs. Duke (7:04 pm ET) and Stanford vs. Xavier (9:07 pm ET) on ESPN/ESPN360.com.

The return of Pokey?

A few days ago WNBA Indiana Fever coach Lin Dunn tweeted this nugget:

@pokeychatman ..some very good D1 jobs open..time for you to get one!..let me know if i can help you!

Chatman has had tremendous success coaching superstars overseas in Russia for Spartak Moscow Region since her infamous exit from LSU in 2007 due to allegations of an inappropriate sexual relationship between her and a former player. While several players have defended Chatman and talk to her via Twitter, Dunn is one of the first (if not the first) high-profile coaches to have publicly shown support for her since the scandal.

He makes what?

Andrew Zimbalist, a respected sports economist from my alma mater and who I remember dearly (I minored in economics ) calls the salary of Kansas Athletic Director Lew Perkins “utterly outrageous.” Perkins made $4.4 million in 2009. According to the Read more

Anne Donovan leaving New York Liberty to coach Seton Hall

By Cheryl Coward at 29 March, 2010, 8:07 am

Hall of Famer Anne Donovan, coach of the WNBA New York Liberty, is set to take over at Seton Hall. The hiring was first reported by  The Record of Hackensack on its website Sunday night. Just a few hours after the news spread via Twitter, NJ.com/The Star-Ledger also filed a story on the hiring.

Donovan, a native of Ridgewood, New Jersey, will be the second coach in a year to leave the WNBA for the college ranks. USC coach Michael Cooper coached the Los Angeles Sparks before taking over the Trojans this past season. He announced his hiring before his last season with the Sparks. It has not been revealed yet if Donovan will take a similar route.

Seton Hall is expected to hold a press conference on Wednesday announcing its new coach. The school had an abysmal season, going (9-21, 1-15 Big East). The former coach for the Pirates, Phyllis Mangina, resigned on March 15. She posted an overall record of 352-368 after 25 seasons at SHU.

Donovan became the head coach of the New York Liberty in early December 2009. After taking over as the Liberty’s interim head coach halfway through the 2009 regular season, Donovan compiled a 7-10 overall record. She began her WNBA career as the interim head coach of… Read more
