2013 WNBA Draft Lottery Storyfied: Fans mystified as Phoenix beats the odds, Mystics have bad luck

The Phoenix Mercury had 276 chances out of 1,000 to win the first draft pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft Lottery, second to the 442 chances for the Washington Mystics. However, the team that sat out star Diana Taurasi for most of the season ended up on top after the balls were picked by league president Laurel Richie. Within seconds of the lottery outcome, many fans, players and sports writers began venting on Twitter and Facebook about the results. The following is the timeline of the day’s events, just 24 hours before the beginning of postseason play.
