Led by sophomore guard Chennedy Carter who fouled out with 22 seconds left in the game, unranked Texas A&M (7-2) beat top-ten team Oregon State (7-2) Saturday evening in Hawaii. The Beavers, ranked at No. 7 in the STI/Hoopfeed poll and No. 8 in the AP rankings, could not gain any momentum in the last minute as they trailed by just one point before the Aggies pulled away.
The game was the final contest of the Oregon State-hosted third annual Maui Jim Maui Classic. The event also featured UC Riverside and Eastern Washington.
“In my 16 years at Texas A&M, this is going down as one of my top five wins, because of how we played and how we earned it against a top 10 team,” Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair said.
Carter finished with 27 points. Sophomore guard Kayla Wells added 20 points and sophomore forward N’dea Jones pulled down a whopping 20 rebounds to go with her eight points. Carter hit a milestone in the game, scoring her 1,000th career point. She is the fastest player to reach 1,000 points in Texas A&M history and was named the tournament MVP for averaging 26.5 points over two games
Senior guard Katie McWilliams paced Oregon State with 19 points and sophomore guard Aleah Goodman contributed 14 points. Junior guard Mikayla Pivec was also in double figures with 10 points plus eight rebounds.
Texas A&M now leads the series between the two teams 2-1. The teams last met in the 1987-88 season.
