Stanford-bound Chiney Ogwumike wins Morgan Wootten award

Stanford-bound prep star Chiney Ogwumike is the winner of the 2010 Morgan Wootten Player of the Year Award for her accomplishments on and off the court. McDonald’s along with Morgan Wootten, legendary coach and McDonald’s All American Games selection chair, named her the ninth annual winner of the award.
Ogwumike, the three-year all-state selection from Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, Texas, joins Maya Moore (2007), Tina Charles (2006), Candace Parker (2004) and Ivory Latta (2003). Ogwumike won the honor over Bria Hartley (North Babylon High School – North Babylon, N.Y.), Kaneisha Horn (Ramsay High School – Birmingham, Ala.), Natasha Howard (Toledo Waite High School – Toledo, Ohio) and Odyssey Sims (Irving MacArthur High School – Irving, Tex.).

The McDonald’s All American Basketball Games selection committee announced final rosters today for the 33rd annual Boys Game and ninth Girls Game on the ESPNU McDonald’s All American Selection Show. The Games will be played on March 31 at the Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
"Year after year I am impressed with the extraordinary high school talent the McDonald’s All American Games brings to the forefront of the basketball world," said Alonzo Mourning, captain of the McDonald’s All American Advisory Council, in a statement. "These young athletes will not only get the chance to become basketball stars of the next generation, but more importantly they will be provided the opportunity to bring attention and raise money for an important cause and learn essential life lessons off the court."

The 2010 WBCA High School All-America Game will be played on the same court as the NCAA Women’s Final Four in San Antonio, Texas. The college-style regulation game is free to the public and is scheduled to tip-off at 4:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 3, at the Alamodome. As a part of the NCAA Women’s Final Four and WBCA National Convention festivities, the game will feature the nation’s top 20 high school girls’ basketball players.

The USA Women’s U16 National Team landed in Mexico City yesterday for the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. The tournament is a qualifier for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship scheduled for July 16-25 in France.
The team plays its first game Aug. 10 against the Dominican Republic, followed by Puerto Rico on Aug. 11 and Argentina on Aug. 12. The top two finishing teams in each preliminary round group will advance to the semifinals on Aug. 13.
A draw placed the USA in Group B along with Argentina, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Group A includes Canada, Brazil, Guatemala and host country Mexico
The bottom two teams from each group will play for 5th through 8th places. The gold medal game will be played Friday, Aug. 14.

In a ceremony before last night’s ESPY awards, Notre Dame women’s basketball incoming freshman guard Skylar Diggins won Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year honors. Diggins is the fourth women’s basketball player to win the award following Maya Moore, Tina Charles and Candace Parker. Garrett Gilbert, a high school football player from Texas, won in the male category.
At the ESPYs gymnast Nastia Liukin beat tennis star Serena Williams, Connecticut basketball player Maya Moore and Los Angeles Sparks star Candace Parker for the best female athlete award. However, Parker won best WNBA player and Moore won the best female college athlete award.

The July recruiting season is in full swing. After an Independence Day weekend break, college coaching staffs hit the road for a month long session of heavy-duty recruiting.
For nationally ranked players, last week’s Nike Skills Camp in Oregon gave them the opportunity to learn from elite coaches and college players before they begin showcasing their skills this month.
Early Monday morning, gyms across the country began hosting scores of players, coaches and parents. At the Big State Flava Jam in Dallas, players have the chance to get looks from Prairie View A&M’s Cynthia Cooper, Texas’ Gail Goestenkors and many more including coaches from Tennessee, UTEP, Dillard, Memphis and Xavier.
